Our North-West Adventure 2011, Part 1: We’re on our way, to Shark Bay

During July, we packed up the camper trailer, waved goodbye to our cat and dog and jumped in the car for a massive road trip up north. Our goal? Get to the coral, do some swimming and skindiving, maybe wave to a dolphin or two. The first few days involved lots of driving, but the kids took it well and we had the chance to meet up with friends of ours in Geraldton. From there we continued north to Shark Bay… and encountered some three billion year old creatures, one Barking Fence and a few billion white shells…

Seven hours in the car? There's definitely time for a pit stop along the way. Hello, Cervantes!

A bucket of apples a day

(while eating breakfast)

Dad: They used catapults to throw enormous boulders and huge rocks at cities. They were big enough to smash down walls, or destroy houses and crush people.

RJ: And apples.

Dad: What? Apples? What about apples?

RJ: They used to throw apples too.

Dad: I didn’t know that.

RJ: Yeah, before they found out about the rocks, and if they couldn’t find any. They used apples.

Dad: That must have been terrible!

RJ: It was! Apples really hurt if you throw them really hard!

RJ: You know, you can’t actually get history doctors anywhere. They just don’t exist!

Dad: What do you mean by history doctors?

RJ: Doctors that fix people the way they used to, from history.

Dad: Well, I guess not… It’s because we can usually do better using modern methods.

RJ: And also… because those guys are all dead.

RJ: You walk into a shop and are like,
“Hey Buddy, any Romans for sale?”
“No, Sorry… Because they’re all dead.

So… What have the Romans ever done for us?

(while eating dinner)

RJ: I’d like to thank somebody tonight. I’d like to thank the Romans… for inventing toilets.

RJ: THANK YOU ROMANS!

(LR, Mum and Dad): Thank you Romans!

Dad: They invented plumbing and running water in houses too.

… a few moments later …

RJ: I’d like to thank somebody tonight. I’d like to thank the Romans again… for inventing running water!

RJ: THANK YOU ROMANS!

LR, Mum and Dad: (groaning) Thank you Romans!

… a few minutes later …

RJ: I’d like to thank somebody else tonight. I’d like to thank the Egyptians! For inventing paper!

(LR, Mum and Dad): ARRGGGHH!!

Were people even around back then?

(Working on a project on Snow Leopards in the Himalayas)

Mom: The Himalayas are really craggy and sharp looking because they’re young mountains.

LR: How old are they?

Mom: Well, they happened when India crashed into Asia. That started happening about 50 million years ago and it’s still happening. The mountains are still growing.

LR: 50 million years? So was that in the 1960′s?
